Prior to the Ontrymian unification, and even prior to briefly annexing Scholton, the kingdom of Beobrim has always been the largest and most prosperous in Ealdagen. Beobrimians view their kingdom as the religious, economic, and military center of Ealdagen, and by extension, of humanity itself. At least, of civilised humanity. Ealdagen is the cradle of humanity in Ancipsei, and despite Nuikusord Forest (which is in Scholton) being said to be the birthplace of humanity, Beobrimians argue that the birthplace of civilization is the south-eastern coast of the Newland Sea. This is both due to the fact that the largest ruins of the first kingdom are found in Demon’s Cache, and because it is the place of the founding of Beobrim after the fall of the first kingdom.
The devastation of the first kingdom 2500 years ago was most felt in southern Ealdagen, where its population was the largest. The few survivors who eventually rebuilt into the kingdom of Beobrim have held a grudge against Rozhal, the sorceress blamed for the fall, since then. This has manifested throughout the history of Beobrim as ebbing periods of hatred for magic and the arcane. The strongest of such periods was the Isle Crusades, led by the Beobrimian paladin King Serich the Holy around 300 years ago. King Serich worshipped Imperium, the God of Control. Him and his crusaders nearly eradicated the arcane presence in Ealdagen, their influence spreading north to Scholton and Ontryme and causing a brief period of unification under his banner, lasting 30 years until his death.
Since the death of King Serich the Holy, Beobrimians still predominantly worship Imperium as their one and true God. They have a patriarchal royal lineage, with the King being seen as having divine right to rule, and being an extension of Imperium Himself. The last king of Beobrim prior to the Ontrymian unification was King Leoric the Righteous. In a similar vision of divine purpose, he saw a vision of a unified Ealdagen. He used the prosperity and wealth of Beobrim to mount a campaign against Scholton, annexing the north of Ealdagen to Beobrim. This victory lasted only a little over six months, as, weakened from the war, he was unable to defend his kingdom from the Ontrymian forces who attacked soon after.
Most of the nobility of Beobrim was either displaced during the Ontrymian unification, having lost their posts and land, or fell in line with the Ontrymians and were allowed to keep their status. King Leoric the Righteous was deposed after refusing to bow to the Ontrymian crown. His direct lineage was removed from nobility, and his nephew Elric, a former cleric of Imperium from the Grand Cathedral Isles, was given the position of Lord of Beobrim. Lord Elric is cooperative with the Ontrymian Empire, using his position of religious authority to pose King Kieran as the true chosen of Imperium.
Beobrimians have slowly grown more tolerant towards the arcane since the times of King Serich the Holy, however their conservative religious culture still enforces a taboo around magic to this day. This mild increase in tolerance towards magic is in no small part due to their trade relations with Oricant being mediated through Novusolum, which has greatly enriched the local economy. Aside from economic ties to the new world, Beobrim has long since fostered economic cooperations with Ixen after an initial period of hostility with the native lizard people. Ixenthel even served as the original departure port for the wealthy farmer families who left Beobrim to settle in Tophen 400 years ago. Caravan routes from the City of Equity to Ixenthel and Farholm form the basis of this cooperation, and the incorporation of Tophen into its routes have since expanded the trade and wealth of Beobrim.
Together with the wealth accrued from trade, fine goods imported from Ixen, Tophen, and Oricant have shaped the culture of Beobrim to be ostentatious, in a manner that seems contradictory to its fundamentalist views. Traditional values towards religious worship and normative culture are proudly displayed through imported metals and silks in the colors of Beobrim; red, blue, white, and gold. Even the peasantry of the kingdom of Beobrim wear dyed fabrics in the colors of the coat of arms, and tend to own one or two golden trinkets bought from the caravans of Tophen and honored as family heirlooms. Imagery of the crown, the lion and the angelic wings of the crest of Beobrim are ubiquitous throughout southern Ealdagen. (Fun fact: the red wings of the Arx Imperium were inspired by the Beobrim coat of arms in a show of national pride of the wizards who founded Novusolum, even after their exile).
Geographically, Beobrim is split into three main areas; the eastern coast, the forests and hills of the central west, and the southern plains.
The eastern coast of Beobrim has always been the most populous and prosperous area, subsiding on naval and caravan trade with abundant local industries of farming and fishing. The city of Beobrim is the southernmost city of the eastern coast, serving as the capital of the kingdom of Beobrim and ground for the Lion’s Throne, the seat of power of Beobrim currently held by Lord Elric. It has a large port, and ships often sail to The Grand Cathedral Isles, a city that serves as the religious center of Beobrim. There, the Grand Cathedral of Imperium sits atop a hill, and is a common site for pilgrimages from across the kingdom. It is also the center of celebration for holidays associated with Imperium, such as the Harvest Celebration. Cape Prosper and Bay Fort are smaller coastal towns, with a commercial and military focus respectively. They pave the way for ships traveling up to the villages neighboring the Rooted River carrying goods and travelers.
The central west of Beobrim consists mainly of footpaths and occasional caravan roads through hills and forests. Midgard is the largest city in this area, operating as a large commercial hub that connects Beobrim to the Triad Point and the two other kingdoms of Ealdagen. It sees a lot of traffic from the U.F.E., as well as missionaries of Imperium. Military outposts dot the hillsides, of which Fort Grimm and Hill Fort serve as the two largest, offering an overview of the landscape and of the towering mountain range to the west. Towns have developed around the two forts, and are often used by the U.F.E. for military exercises and as base-camps for traveling military troupes.
The southern plains connect Irongrad, the City of Equity, and Loweport to the rest of Beobrim. It is an area that is avoided by most upstanding Beobrimians, since it is seen as a den of bad fortune and sin due to its connection to the first kingdom and the ruins in the Demon’s Cache. However, archeologists from Ealdagen and other adventuring types are sometimes drawn to its mystique. They often end up inThe City of Equity, which serves as a gathering and distribution hub from Ixen and Tophen, often attracting visitors in search of exotic goods and tales. It is the largest city in the southern region of Beobrim, and it is known to have less strict norms and supervision by the crown than the rest of the kingdom.
The two other major cities in southern Beobrim serve a more functional purpose, and its residents often get a reputation as uneducated and desperate. Irongrad is a large mining city, predominantly extracting iron and coal from the mountain range. Beobrimians have had a lower tolerance for goblins than Ontrymians throughout history, foregoing collaboration and expelling any stray goblins from their mines. Loweport is the lowest point of Ealdagen, and serves as a small port city mostly for logistical purposes. Their people are often humble fishermen or sailors, whose heretical worship of the goddess Flux often goes ignored by the crown due to their distance and irrelevance to the wider region.
