The empire of Ealdagen is one of the older, more well-established human territories in Ventyr. Due to its rolling hills, temperate climate, and fertile land, people in Ealdagen have always thrived. It is bisected by the Rooted River, which descends from the Barakdek mountain range and culminates in a delta at the Eastern coast. However, before being the Ealdagenian Empire, this region was split into three powers- the kingdoms of Scholton, Beobrim, and Ontryme. The three kingdoms intersected in Triad Point, a large market at the base of the King's Falls, across the Rooted River from Scholton.

The kingdom of Beobrim was, originally, the wealthiest power in Ealdagen. Settlers headed by a powerful sect of wizards left from its port and headed East to the Newland Sea in search of riches and magic. They were the first contact from Ventyr to Oricant, and began a colonization process. This allowed the settlers from Beobrim to take a large portion of the west of Oricant, establishing the magocracy of Novusolum. Trade with Novusolum allowed Beobrim to maintain most of the wealth in Ealdagen, and to eventually overthrow the kingdom of Scholton.

Scholton was a kingdom set on the Northern banks of the Rooted River, and subsided mostly on logging, hunting, farming, and fishing. Once taken over by Beobrim, the combined area spread from the edges of the desert to the South all the way to the tundra in the North. While they certainly had more area, the newly expanded kingdom of Beobrim soon found themselves outmatched by a powerful force from the Ontrymian Empire. Headed by the charismatic King Kieran, Ontryme had been amassing weapons expertly crafted from both dwarves to the north and goblins to the south. Their closeness to the southern part of the Barakdek mountains allowed for access to precious metals inaccessible to the rest of the region. This gave Ontryme the wealth to trade in secret with its neighbors across the mountain, and eventually take over the entire Ealdagenian region. There are still rumors about well hidden, well-guarded passages connecting the two sides of the mountain range for easy trade known only by King Kieran and his most trusted inner circle.

After the unification of the area now almost 40 years ago, the forces of King Kieran were met with arid, unwelcoming tundra to the North and an even more unwelcoming scorching desert to the South. Therefore, his expansion is halted for now.

There is frequent travel by boat between the large ports of Ealdagen to transport resources and people. However, there is not much travel by boat to Farholm since the Strait of Rozhal is extremely hard to navigate. Agriculture still thrives in the region, with water mills dotting the length of the Rooted River.

To the north, in Fort Draca, traders from Darastrix sell their wares, but the region is largely inhospitable due to its proximity to Hellmaw Valley. The neighboring Plains of Plenty were so named as an attempt to convince farmers to buy land and expand into Darastrix. However, the region is not very densely populated as commoners still fear its proximity to the land of dragons.

The Frontier is the border between the Nelith’Kalok desert and the Plains of Plenty, which proved uncrossable for the Ontrymian expansion force. There is still a military presence in Fort Draca and Norprice, which creates mounting pressure of invasion on Darastrix.

The eastern coast is the most prosperous area of Ealdagen due to it's strong trade relationship with Novusolum and historically well-travelled roads. A few central cities of note are Carte and Ortgeard. Carte has a large paper production and book press industry, providing most of the books to rest of kingdom. Ortgeard is an orchard town, with a strong culinary cultural hub.

To the south, the City of Equity was established as a trade hub between Beobrim (and now Ealdagen) and Ixen. It was renamed after a trade accord was struck between humans and lizard people of Ixen, ceasing hostility and allowing free passage for merchants and starting the migration of humans towards Ixen. Its status as a trade hub is strengthened by its connection to Irongrad (largest mining city outside of Ontryme) and Loweport (southernmost port for boat transport around Ealdagen).

Before Beombrim, and before Ontryme, a first kingdom of man ruled the region. The exact reason for their fall is not well documented, but there are some known connections to a great weather event borne of magic. Discovery of ruins of this first kingdom led to the creation of a group of archeologists, who try to unearth this downfall. There is a prevalent issue of the sale of fake artifacts by and to these communities.

Rozhal, seen as a powerful sorceress, is blamed for destroying the first kingdom, so the second kingdoms rebuild with more distrust in the arcane and a return to organized religion. The area around Beobrim was a large city before the fall of the first empire, and arcane practitioners eventually found enough magic residue in its ruins to create a sect of wizards. This area is now known as Demon’s Cache due to the general negative attitude towards magic. Around 300 years ago, a powerful paladin king from the Grand Cathedral Isles declared all non-holy magic heretical, and went on a crusade. This pushed most arcane practitioners flee north towards Daegholm, and eventually to sail for Oricant out of both port cities. Through this witch hunt, he briefly united the three kingdoms. Upon his death, they defaulted back to their original ruling families until the Ontrymian unification.

Since then, only certain types of magic are allowed, and in a very restricted capacity. Accusing others of practicing “wrong magic” became a common way of dealing with political rivals or enemies. Most magic in Ealdagen is now centered in Sunscin in Nuikusord Forest, and tends to the druidic or religious.

The Echoes is an organization of thieves that operate mainly in Ealdagen. It was composed largely of former soldiers/intelligence agents from Beobrim and Scholton that came to an unlikely alliance, and who worked together and against Ontryme. The Echoes originally started as a resistance force against the Ontrymian empire, but once it was clear that the war was won, they essentially became a band of organized thieves and assassins. After the unification, the Ontrymians sent their own noble families to control Scholton and Beobrim, removing the original nobility from power, so the Echoes often target the nobility imposed by Ontryme. In response, Ontryme formed a band of highly trained agents, taught in interrogation and infiltration techniques to keep tabs both within Ealdagen and outside of it. These are known as the Order of the Lily.

Eventually the infighting in the Echoes led to their capture by the Ontrymians, after a high-ranking member accepted a bribe from the Order of the Lily to sell out other members. This resulted in their disbandment and capture of many members. After the disbandment, the few remaining Echoes members fled the country, with a few settling down with old contacts in Port of Gold. There, for the following years, they started to rebuild. However, this time around, they were more selective about new members and had a more concise goal- profit. 25 years ago, they formed an organized smuggling ring centered in Port of Gold. But, as their infamy grew, so did news that the Ontrymian Empire was still searching for the last remaining Echoes members. The Order of the Lily was making its way to the south of Ventyr. Therefore, the new Echoes set out to hunt down old members that could potentially give more information to the Empire that would lead them to Port of Gold.

The Order of the Lily is an elite branch of the military of Ontryme, originally established to eradicate The Echoes due to their targeting of Ontrymian nobility in Scholton and Beobrim. Currently, their function centers primarily on national and international diplomacy to enforce the agenda of the Ontrymian crown. They are also responsible for investigating counter-espionage within Ealdagen, and foreign espionage outside of the borders. Most of the members work in intelligence, with a few combat-oriented clusters for enforcement. A smaller organization than the U.F.E., members of the Order of the Lily tend to out-rank the unified forces, and have preferential access to resources and information. However, membership to the Order of the Lily is much more secretive than the U.F.E.

The United Front of Ealdagen (U.F.E.) is King Kieran’s attempt at a unified military and intelligence force for the region of Ealdagen. Established after the Ontrymian unification, it is made up of the military forces of Ontryme, Beobrim, and Scholton, operating under the banner of the Ontrymian Empire. While they work collaboratively, cultural traditions of the different kingdoms are still visible between members, and they often display the banner of their kingdom aside from the U.F.E. coat of arms. This is encouraged by the King, who believes that a unified front is only possible through integration rather than eradication.

The role of the U.F.E. in current Ealdagen centers around peace-keeping, research, and diplomacy. Footsoldiers are either stationed as guardsmen in settlements, or operate in roaming groups throughout, periodically reporting back to superior officers stationed around Ealdagen. More high-ranking members of the U.F.E. are given specific missions for the securement of national interest, such as escort, extraction, and occasional diplomatic missions. Although seen as a more agnostic military force than the Order of the Lily, the U.F.E. still ultimately reports back to the Ontrymian crown.
